William Banting was an obese English undertaker who desperately wanted to lose weight. In 1862, he paid a visit to his doctor, William Harvey, who proposed a radical eating plan that was high in fat and low in carbohydrates. By following this eating plan, Banting experienced such remarkable weight loss that he wrote an open letter to the public. This letter became widely distributed. As more people started following this eating plan to lose weight, the term ‘Banting’ or to ‘Bant’ became popularised. In my own view, I don’t think it was that popular. Think about it, why do we only know about it now, after so many years? The Banting lifestyle was re-introduced to us by Professor Timothy David Noakes (born 1949) – a South African scientist and emeritus professor in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town – who researched it and wrote a book in 2013 called The Real Meal Revolution.
